Following their recent Festival successes - including The Year of Magical Thinking [2008] and The History Boys [2007] - London’s National Theatre returns to Dublin with a new critically acclaimed smash-hit written by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Lee Hall [Billy Elliot].
In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine.
Winner of the Evening Standard Best New Play award, this humorous, deeply moving production takes a timely look at art, class and politics, demonstrating how a seemingly ordinary group of men can do extraordinary things.
